Cutting Through All the Hype of Broadband Service

Feb-13th-2010

While many individuals are becoming technologically savvy these days, there are still many of us who don’t understand what all the jargon surrounding broadband service means. It helps to define broadband itself – it is simply the size or width of the connection that delivers internet service. A greater width, or “bandwidth”, means a faster connection. For certain technologies like video streaming, online games, and social networking, a larger bandwidth becomes necessary. We also need to define the various vehicles that broadband service is delivered. DSL is dedicated bandwidth, meaning only the subscriber uses it. It delivers internet service through telephone infrastructure. Cable is shared bandwidth, meaning several subscribers use the delivery system, but the bandwidth is also quite a bit wider than DSL. In terms of service, they tend to be comparable with cable being a bit faster. Satellite internet sends a signal directly to your modem via the airwaves.

While that overview of the basic services available might be helpful, technology marches on. New innovations like Att UVerse are turning the internet service community upside down. Their all digital fiber-optics network delivers incredible reliability and speed, and the integrated technology that UVerse offers through their television and home phone services adds a new layer of technological advancement to ease our lives and make them more enjoyable.
